Chris Nelson, Counseling Intern

Hi! I’m Chris, and I love the work I do as a therapist. I taught middle and high school for several years, and my favorite part of that job was the conversations I got to have and being able to help students. Now as a therapist, I get to focus on the conversations and helping on a more personal level; to quote Paul Young, I get to “walk on the holy ground of other people’s stories.” I specialize in working with teens, young adults, and men’s issues, but I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds!

I know how intimidating it can be to share vulnerably with a stranger. My top priorities are making my clients feel seen, understood, respected, and to have compassion and empathy for clients instead of the judgment some of us fear we’ll be met with when we open up.

“I work with those struggling with depression and anxiety along with a variety of other mental health challenges.  I use a variety of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and solution-focused therapy. I view my clients from a strengths-based perspective, not focusing on what my client’s lack, but on the good qualities they each bring to the table.

I’ve seen first-hand the power therapy has to change how people view their lives and themselves, and to help people feel supported while living in pursuit of their values, and I’d love to get to work with you to achieve the goals you’re working towards.”

Chris Nelson is currently a counseling intern in his final semesters of his masters program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Northern Arizona University. Through his program experience, he has worked with many clients struggling with a variety of challenges.  Chris especially enjoys working with children, teens, young adults, and in the area of men’s counseling.

Chris is passionate about helping people navigate life transitions and achieve their mental health goals. He hopes to empower you to better understand yourself, develop effective coping strategies, and continue to build a meaningful, purposeful life.
