The key to restoring connection is, first, interrupting and dismantling these destructive sequences and then actively constructing a more emotionally open and receptive way of interacting, one in which partners feel safe confiding their hidden fears and longings.” Sue Johnson Co-Creator of EFT

Are Trust, Communication, Conflict, or Intimacy Issues Taking a Toll on Your Relationship?
Do you love your spouse but feel insecure, unsafe or unhappy when you are with him or her? Have you tried to heal together but fall into patterns of avoidance or ineffective communication? Do you argue, avoid or blame one another instead of turning to each other and your shared faith for solutions and support? You may want to foster a stronger, deeper connection with your spouse, but aren’t sure what you can do to change existing behaviors. Or, maybe you have reached a crisis point in your marriage, such as an affair or other betrayal, and need “emergency life support” to restore trust and connection in your marriage. You may have even talked about separation or divorce, but want to make sure you have tried everything you can to save your relationship. Perhaps you have tried traditional couples counseling before but didn’t receive the expert support and practical skills you needed to address the specific problems in your relationship. Maybe intensive couples therapy might be right for you and your significant other. An intensive is designed to help your relationship in a short period of time by working with a therapist for 2, 3, or 4 days for several hours a day in very focused therapy sessions.
Many Couples Struggle to Resolve Conflict, Communicate Effectively, and to Find Deeper Connection
Almost every couple goes through periods of time when they feel disconnected or stuck in unhealthy patterns or routines. Marriage problems arise for a variety of reasons and can leave you questioning yourself, your spouse or your marriage. It may be that you have felt unhappy or unfulfilled for years, and your efforts to talk to your spouse only seem to make things worse. Or, maybe you and your spouse don’t know how to reestablish trust after a betrayal or infidelity. Unresolved hurts and resentments may be creating tension, fighting or ongoing conflicts. Alternately, you may feel increasingly distant as you and/or your spouse try to reduce arguments by avoiding one another. It may seem like you are living with a roommate instead of an intimate partner. Unfortunately, couples wait an average of six years after problems start before seeking guidance and support according to Dr. John Gottman, world renowned couples therapist and founder of Gottman Method Couples Therapy. And, in that time, the relationship problems can build to a breaking point. You may want or need a breakthrough with your spouse or partner, but it can be difficult finding a licensed couples counselor who is highly trained and uniquely qualified to work with couples in crises.
If you’re looking for intensive marriage or couples counseling that provide support, direction, and relief we can help. Our intensive couples therapy helps couples identify their core emotions and needs, address sources of conflict and disconnection, and to learn new ways of relating, connecting, and communicating.
Marriage and Couples Therapy Intensives and Retreats Can Help Strengthen Your Relationship
Whether your marriage is at risk or you are trying to deepen an already strong connection, intensive relationship therapy can offer you and your spouse/partner education, resources, guidance and support. The licensed couples therapists at Crossroads Counseling utilize highly effective couples therapy counseling interventions such as Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, EFCT. EFCT helps couples to create a safe and compassionate space where you can feel comfortable exploring your relationship. By focusing on your unique challenges, goals, needs and beliefs in an intensive couples retreat, you can create meaningful and lasting change.
During our couples retreats you will learn about the science of attachment. You can discover how early attachments and past experiences may be influencing your respective and collective patterns of communication and learn how your attachment style impacts the relational dynamics you have with your spouse/partner. When you understand how you and your spouse approach inevitable moments of disagreement and disconnection you can then develop empathy to more easily share your emotions and respond to each other’s needs in a healthy manner. Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, you can listen with compassion and an open heart. And rather than becoming defensive or placing blame, you can learn to come together to talk about difficult issues and respond to relationship challenges with love and forgiveness.
Our therapists utilize Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) techniques to help couples understand and address the root causes behind relationship challenges. EFT has been clinically proven to help couples find healing when they are experiencing significant relationship issues. In fact, 90 percent of couples who complete EFT notice improvement in their relationship (compared to only 35 percent for the next leading couples therapy model). As trained and certified EFT therapists, we can help you and your spouse learn new ways to communicate and connect more effectively and efficiently.
Whether you are looking for one-on-one intensive couples counseling or a group experience such as Hold Me Tight, we can help you build a deeper, more connected bond with your spouse/partner. We offer the following individual and group couples intensives:
Option One: 2 day private marriage counseling intensive ideal for couples experiencing mild distress.
Option Two: 3 day private marriage counseling intensive ideal for couples experiencing moderate distress.
Option Three: 4 day private marriage counseling intensive ideal for couples experiencing severe distress.
Option Four: You may participate in intensive couples therapy sessions by attending 2-3 sessions per week. The typical session length is 2 hours (two back to back 50 minute sessions with a short break in between). One of the benefits of this schedule is that it allows for space and time in between sessions for further integration and application of growth. Typically, this type of schedule is set for 2 or 3 weeks successively. This can be an ideal option for couples who live locally in Arizona.
Hold Me Tight Weekend Intensive – Group experience with multiple couples participating in the Hold Me Tight retreat weekend usually starting on Thursday evening, full day on Friday, and ending on Saturday.

But, you may still have questions or concerns about intensive couples retreats…
We should be able to work through marriage problems on our own.
It is not uncommon for couples to feel like they should be able to manage challenges without outside help. But, it can be hard to see the forest from the trees when you’re going through serious marital problems. And, you may not be sure what you can do to heal and strengthen your relationship. A marriage therapist can serve as a guide, offering resources and support so you can understand marital stressors and work together to find solutions.
We don’t have the time or money for a marriage retreat.
It can be hard committing time and energy to couples counseling, especially if finances have been a source of stress or conflict. But, the relationship you share with your partner is one of the most important relationships you’ll have, and the happiness and the health of your family and marriage is invaluable. If cost and/or time are a factor, we offer half-day, weekend and group intensives to help accommodate tighter schedules and budgets. Finally, if you don’t have the time to take 2, 3, or 4 days in a row that’s okay. You may participate in intensive couples therapy sessions by attending 2-3 sessions per week. The typical session length is 2 hours (two back to back 50 minute sessions with a short break in between). One of the benefits of this schedule is that it allows for space and time in between sessions for further integration and application of growth. Typically, this type of schedule is set for 2 or 3 weeks successively.
I’m not sure I’m comfortable sharing our problems in front of a group.
Group intensives aren’t right for everyone. But, many couples find that they prefer group work to one-on-one marriage counseling. There can be a tremendous benefit in sharing your experience with a group and seeing that you are not alone. Furthermore, you will never have to share anything that doesn’t feel safe or comfortable. The other upside to marriage/relationship workshops is that in addition to receiving the guidance and support of a licensed couples therapist, you can build connections and friendships with other group members and enjoy a space where it is safe to be open and vulnerable. The bottom line is if you are not comfortable with being in a group then you and your spouse/partner may sign up for one of our private intensive couples counseling sessions.
Do we have to be Christian to participate in marriage intensives?
No. In the same way we counsel people from all faiths (and even no faith) backgrounds couples who wish to attend our marriage intensives are welcome.
