Are Your Emotions Getting Out of Control? – How to Find Relief from Your Anxious Feelings

Anxious feelings can cast a dark cloud over your entire day. Maybe you struggle with anxiety throughout your workday. Or maybe you get shaky and nervous whenever you need to attend a gathering with other people. Sometimes, you might not even be able to pinpoint the source of your anxiety. Yet you know that for some reason, you can’t seem to banish those lingering fears and worries.

But there are ways to find relief from your anxiety. You are not at the mercy of your emotions. It’s possible to reclaim your agency and sense of control. Here are a few techniques that can help you manage your anxiety and even channel it into something positive.

Write in a Journal

Sometimes, you simply need to get your thoughts out of your head and onto a blank sheet of paper. The next time you feel anxious, grab a pen and a notebook. You can pour your heart out in your journal. Rest assured that your thoughts will be totally private.

When you write, you can process everything running through your head. You can even spend a little time coming up with solutions to the problems that have been plaguing you. Seeing everything written down can make it all seem much easier to tackle.

Identify Negative Thought Patterns

If you choose to write in a journal to work through your anxiety, you may notice that you dwell on certain negative thought patterns over and over again. And even if you don’t start journaling, you might have realized that you circle back to the same stress-inducing thoughts.

Once you identify these patterns, you can make it a point to try shifting your attention to something else. Having the power to label these patterns as such, rather than giving them too much weight, can be a powerful change.

Exercise Regularly

Moving your body can work wonders for anxiety! While exercise is not a magical cure for people suffering from anxious feelings, it can make a big difference. When you exercise, you’ll feel the positive effects of endorphins – these chemicals are proven mood-boosters!

Exercise can help to take your mind off of your worries. You can even try forms of exercise like yoga to support your mental health.

Get Busy With a Hobby

At times, boredom can worsen anxiety. When you don’t have much going on, it’s easy to get lost in your thoughts and feel down on yourself. Sometimes, just staying occupied and entertained can help you find some temporary relief from anxiety.

For example, maybe curling up with a good novel will take your mind off of your anxiety. Picking up a creative hobby can also be a fantastic way to release your anxiety – when you work on an artistic project, you have a personal outlet for your emotions.

Talk It Out

Maybe you’ve tried to work through your anxiety on your own, but you desperately need someone to lean on. When your anxious emotions feel overwhelming, you can call up a loved one to vent. They might be able to provide some words of wisdom. And sometimes, a friend or relative can help you see why your worries are unfounded.

If you don’t feel comfortable telling a friend about your anxiety, but you want to talk to someone about everything you’re going through, it may be a good time to consider meeting with a therapist.
