James Wogan, MA, LAC
James is a follower of Christ, Licensed Associate Counselor, and husband to the most incredible woman on earth. James is passionate about helping others to see how valuable they are; he aims to walk alongside people as they gain new insight and tools to have and enjoy a full life. He specializes in men’s issues, marriage/relational counseling (including those with disability and other unique circumstances), group counseling, family counseling and counseling for individuals; James also has extensive experience with teenagers, as he served as a high school youth leader at his church for 4 years.
The first thing most people notice about James is that he has a physical disability and is confined to a power wheelchair. James was born with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and relies on caregivers to help him with most physical tasks. Despite being limited physically, he was raised to work hard and focus on the things he has, rather than the things he does not have. Because of his faith in Christ and support group of loving friends and family, James sees his disability as a unique platform to help others, rather than a burden to be resented.
As a counselor, James uses a variety of methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). He believes that people are the experts of their own lives, and that with some careful exploration they can quickly learn about the cause of painful issues and how to manage them. He works with his clients in an experiential, emotional, and relational manner to help them uncover their values (what they hold to be most important), and to make choices that are true to those values. James has advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy where he can help in their most important and meaningful relationships (marriage, friendships, and family) to improve communication through identifying and resolving their negative interaction cycle and help them to connect on a more intimate level which has the power to create positive and lasting change.
James completed his undergraduate studies at Arizona State University where he studied filmmaking in 2013. He received his Master of Arts in Counseling from Phoenix Seminary in May of 2021 and married his beautiful wife Kelsey the following month. James is a diehard Diamondbacks fan, loves going to the movies, and will never say no to a bag of Fritos or some Reese’s peanut butter cups.
